Total Knee Replacement Rehabilitation

ACL Reconstruction Rehab, Built Around You

Get back to the life you had your knee replaced for.

No two knee replacements are the same, and no two recoveries should be either. At Empower Physical Therapy, your rehab plan is built around you: your body, your surgery, and the activities you want to return to.

Our goal isn't just to help you hit the minimum milestones. It's to restore the motion, strength, and confidence you need for daily life, work, and the recreational activities you love.

Prehab

  1. Evidence shows that individuals who begin some form of Physical Therapy and Pre-op education have significantly improved results early on and in late phase of rehab
  2. It is important to know where your deficits are leading into surgery to work on appropriate muscle building, changing biomechanics and improving range of motion in your knee.
  3. Often times those who have suffered from knee pain and arthritis for a long periods of time have significant weakness in their hips, core and ankles as well which should be part of your plan before and after surgery.

An Individualized, Evidence-Based Approach

Total knee replacement rehabilitation should not be a cookie-cutter program. We use evidence-based practice to give every patient the highest standard of care, and we adjust your plan as you progress.

Your recovery moves through clear stages:

  1. Calm things down. Early on, we focus on reducing pain and swelling so your knee can begin to move comfortably.
  2. Restore range of motion. We work to regain the bend and straightening your knee needs for walking, stairs, and getting in and out of a chair or car.
  3. Build strength and balance. As healing advances, we progress your strength training at the right pace for you, so you get stronger without setbacks.
  4. Return to your activities. We finish by preparing you for the specific things you want to get back to, whether that's your job, a round of golf, hiking, or playing with your grandkids.

How We Help You Recover

We combine several proven treatments to help you reach your goals:

  • Hands-on manual therapy to ease pain, reduce stiffness, and improve how your knee moves.
  • Blood flow restriction (BFR) training to build strength using lighter loads, which is especially helpful early on when heavy lifting isn't appropriate.
  • Shockwave therapy to address stubborn pain and soft-tissue irritation around the knee.
  • Guided exercise progressions that grow with you, from your first gentle movements to the demands of your favorite activities.

Our clinic is equipped with high-end strength and balance equipment, so we can challenge you at exactly the right level, whether you're taking your first steps without a walker or getting ready to return to sport.

Experience You Can Trust

Our team brings nearly two decades of experience working with joint replacement patients. Over that time, surgical techniques and recovery timelines have changed significantly, and we've adapted our care to represent that. You benefit from that experience at every stage of your recovery. We know when it is necessary to reduce intensity, change our plan and when to reach out to your surgical team if symptoms appear to need attention.

Working Hand-in-Hand With Your Surgeon

We communicate with your surgeon regularly throughout your rehab. That keeps everyone on the same page, so your surgeon's expectations are met and your own goals stay at the center of your care. This includes providing progress notes at your follow up visits with your surgeons team, notifying them if progress is behind where it is expected to be and sharing our thoughts to make a plan as a team.
